The Woman Who Invented Rock and Roll Before Rock and Roll Existed
Long before Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry or Little Richard, there was already this African-American woman playing electric guitar with wild intensity in front of ecstatic audiences while simultaneously scandalizing conservative religious circles. Rock and roll had even received an official name and Sister Rosetta Tharpe was already performing something astonishingly similar: – aggressive electric guitar, – unstoppable rhythm, – gospel energy transformed into physical explosion, – and performances capable of setting audiences on fire. The problem was that the world was not yet ready to recognize an African-American woman as a pioneer of that musical language.
For decades Rosetta remained trapped inside the limiting label of “gospel singer,” whilein reality she was building an essential part of rock music’s DNA.Songs such as Strange Things Happening Every Day, Didn’t It Rain and Up Above My Head became defining landmarks of electric gospel and proto-rock music culture.
