The woman who screamed rock and roll before Elvis

Memphis Minnie never resembled the stereotypical elegant blues singer. Her stage presence felt far more physical, confrontational and fiercely independent. Inside Southern juke joints and noisy urban blues environments, Minnie established herself as a formidable guitarist within a world almost completely dominated by men.

She did not ask for space — she conquered it by simply playing harder, louder and better. For this reason she is now considered one of the great proto-rock figures in blues history.

Songs such as Me and My Chauffeur Blues, Bumble Bee and When the Levee Breaks became defining landmarks of Delta blues and female blues guitar culture.

Her music occupies a central position within the blues and rock genealogy explored in The Great Rock and Roll History.
