The “Mechanisms” series, also known as “Totem Builders,” represents the hallmark of my work.

In fact, I started exploring this imaginary world and its inhabitants in 1985, and I have continued to develop it over the years. Over time, this universe has grown in complexity and meaning; moreover, it has gradually become central to my artistic research.

Essentially, it is a metaphor for our world, our relationships, and the explicit and tacit rules that govern them. From an anthropological point of view, it appears as a complex and fascinating system; however, it is also a very complicated mechanism that does not truly work. If you analyze it carefully, in fact, it does not stand up. There is no real logic and, quite often, no common sense. Therefore, the entire structure becomes unstable.

For this reason, these machines are extremely elaborate; nevertheless, they are destined never to function. At the center of this world there are them — or rather, us — the inhabitants of this jungle. Each individual wears a mask and plays a role; moreover, everyone stands exactly where they are supposed to be. As a result, the scene appears both ordered and absurd at the same time.

At the same time, there is another essential aspect: the playful dimension. This element derives from my long experience as an illustrator; therefore, it naturally invites the viewer to explore the image. You can look for hidden details, clues, and small written fragments; in addition, every observation reveals something new. Furthermore, the drawing encourages slow observation and careful attention. You may spend days examining it, and yet you will never find everything.

The real story behind this drawing

I created Meccanismo 5 following the structure of “Mechanism 3,” as you can clearly notice. However, the reason behind it was deeply personal.

In fact, I was genuinely sorry to have sold “Mechanism 3.” Moreover, that piece carried a strong emotional meaning for me, as it was created around the time my son was born. Therefore, I felt the need to create a new work that could somehow remain with me. At the same time, this new piece allowed me to continue that visual idea; consequently, it became both a continuation and a personal reference point.
